Understand transport energy efficiency and keep these in mind when shopping
Sea transport
Sea transport is up to a factor of 250 times more efficient then road transport of goods -> It doesn't really matter that much if the goods come from the other side of the planet on a huge containership.
Rail transport
Rail transport is also more efficient by a huge factor. Railways once they are built have an ecological footprint next to none in operation. A normal passanger train in optimal conditions (flat track, wind conditions suitable) can roll 38 km (23.61 mi) when switched to neutral at normal travel speed. Try that with any car.
Road transport
The larger the truck the more emissions per cargo. You should avoid products transported over vast distances and also avoid using a car too much.
Air transport
Air transport - Lot's of C02. Avoid this if you want to save a lot of energy in one go.
[needed t/km passanger/km CO2 emmission] to make a proper comparison chart
btw. These are called modes of transport you'll need this term if you are getting into the business of shipping goods.
Get energy saving lamps
- They are over 5X more efficient then old lamps
- They last 10X longer
- No, they don't blink anymore
Driving
- If you have to drive a car be reflexive (anticipate) and save energy by less need for acceleration/deceleration
- If you need to buy a car, buy one that is energy efficient
- Drive at 90 km/h (or what is recommended for your car) always when you can.
- Use alternative modes of transport
Recycle
- Recycled aluminium for example consumes only 10% of the energy of extracted aluminium.
